Museum of Contemporary Art of Oaxaca (MACO)

It is located in a building of colonial style, known as House of Cortés, built at the end of the XVII century and beginning of the XVIII. It belonged during many years to the Lazo de la Vega and Pinelo families, as well as to various private owners.

In 1986 the state government acquired it to found the Museum of the City. As Museum of Contemporary Art, open its doors on February 28th, 1992, with the aim of preserving and disseminating the work of the most outstanding exponents of the Oaxacan plastic art of recent years, including Rufino Tamayo, Francisco Gutiérrez, Rodolfo Nieto, Rodolfo Morales and Francisco Toledo.

 In its wide colonial spaces, it offers samples of the contemporary national and international art (painting, sculpture, graphic and photography). It has 16 exhibition rooms and shop. It organizes guided tours, courses and workshops, concerts, conferences, editorial presentations and art courses. It is home of the Biennial of Painting Rufino Tamayo.
