Santa Catarina Juquila is a predominantly religious "Pueblo Mágico" (Magical Town) where visiting to venerate the image of the Virgin of Juquila—considered the patroness of Oaxaca after the Virgin of Solitude in the capital city—holds deep significance among devotees and pilgrims. Year after year, they fervently come to honor her at the sanctuary located in the town, where a mystical and devotional experience unfolds.

The name derives from the Nahuatl word "Juquilla," meaning "place of the beautiful legume." However, the correct name is "Xiuquilla," a contraction of "Xuhquilitla," which translates to "place where the blue quelite abounds." The municipality of Santa Catarina Juquila is located in the Coast region, within the district of Juquila, in the southern part of the state.

It borders Santiago Minas to the north, Villa Sola de Vega and San Pedro Juchatengo to the northeast, San Juan Lachao, Santiago Yaitepec, and Santos Reyes Nopala to the east, Villa de Tututepec de Melchor Ocampo to the south and southwest, and San Miguel Panixtlahuaca and San Juan Quiahije to the west. Juquila is distinguished by the strength and presence of its religious expressions, which form an integral part of the identity and motivation not only of its residents but also of its visitors. Each year, thousands flock to the Sanctuary of the Immaculate Virgin of Juquila, drawn by devotion and a deeply spiritual experience.

An important aspect of Chatino culture is its textile craftsmanship, particularly the cross-stitch embroidery that primarily features flowers and animals. These designs are characterized by the dominant use of vibrant colors such as red, green, and orange, showcasing the elegance and charm of local artistry. This embroidery represents one of the finest handicrafts found in Oaxaca and across the country.
